Jollylands Studio Jollylands Mini Festival

Philosophy

Jollylands is a project based Studio situated on the Ballycorus road about half way between Kilternan & Rathmichael. Ideal for singer songwriters, traditional musicians, Jazz heads and engineers or producers who would like somewhere nice to get away an do the odd bit of work without going into a “big” professional studio. Of course bands are also welcome!

Jollylands is open and bright with lots of natural sunlight and wood. Many studios block up widows to improve sound isolation and keep unwanted sounds out. But lets face it we all feel more comfortable in spaces bathed in bright natural light as opposed to artificial light. That’s not to say sound isolation is unimportant (our main recording room has quadruple glazing!). However we feel having a nice environment to work in, especially at the demo phase of a project is kinda nice no? Ya can get a bit hung up with the ‘perfect’ sound etc etc.

The studio

The Studio is based around Protools (32 Audio tracks and 256 Midi tracks) with Genelec monitors. It physically comprises of two rooms, a vocal room and a live/control room. There is also a small bathroom and tea/coffee facilities including a fridge. There is a large Deck looking out over the rolling, heather covered foothills of the Dublin mountains.

The vocal room is equipped with a 15’ monitor and wireless keyboard and mouse for controlling Protools remotely for artists who do not require and engineer or who like working alone.

The Session

Preparation

Getting the best out of your recording session takes preparation. Fail to prepare? Then prepare to fail! Practice is the key to making your studio time a pleasure as opposed to a nightmare even if it is just a simple voice over. However booking studio time to experiment with some ideas can also lead to some pretty amazing creativity sessions! The important thing is to know what you want to achieve and approach your project in that way.

The following are a few guidelines to give you an idea of how long it takes to record a 3 minute song. Times can vary greatly depending on how well the artistes know the material and what level of production is required (loose demo to very tight professional product ready for the shops and the airwaves).

Estimated recording times
